It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles “Chick” Marshall on May 24, 2024, at the age of 88 in Orange, CA.
The hospitality industry was always a significant part of Charles’ life. Raised in his family’s seashore resort hotel and restaurant business in Wildwood, New Jersey, he developed a deep-rooted passion for the industry. After graduating from the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, Charles went on to hold senior positions and co-own numerous restaurants across the country.
In 1977, the Marshall family sold their resort business and, after exploring several options, purchased Mr. Stox Restaurant in Anaheim, California. The restaurant, which seated over 275 guests across six dining rooms, was managed by Chick, his brother Ron, and Ron’s wife, Debbie Marshall. Under their stewardship, Mr. Stox thrived for 36 years, closing in March 2013. Throughout its operation, the restaurant earned numerous accolades for its exceptional food and service, including the Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRōNA) “Award of Excellence.”
Charles was deeply involved in his community, serving on the Executive Committee of the Anaheim Area Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce for many years. Additionally, Chick held the position of president in several organizations, including the Anaheim YMCA, the Anaheim–East Rotary Club, the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs–South Coast Chapter, and the Anaheim Visitors and Convention Bureau. He was also a member of the California Restaurant Association Board of Directors since 1980 and taught Wine Education classes at Mr. Stox, Cal State Fullerton Hospitality College, and UC Irvine.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the industry, Charles was inducted into the DiRōNA Hall of Fame in May 2017.
Chick’s legacy will continue to inspire the hospitality community, and he will be greatly missed.
